Welcome to Decatur, Georgia.
Decatur is a city located in DeKalb County, Georgia. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 18,147. Some light industry is there.
The city was named for the U.S. war hero Stephen Decatur. Agnes Scott College and Columbia Theological Seminary are there.
To prepare for the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, the downtown area of Decatur underwent a major renovation, with a particular focus on the courthouse square area.
In Decatur you'll find a traditional small-town atmosphere--and the sophistication and excitement of a college town--along with all the benefits of living in a major metropolitan area.
Decatur is just minutes east of downtown Atlanta, minutes west of Stone Mountain, and the MARTA rail station is right under our downtown square, so getting here is a breeze.
Established in 1889 as Decatur Female Academy, Agnes Scott College was the first school in Georgia to be fully accredited (1907) and is still known for its high academic standards. The campus covers eight blocks and encompasses many residential properties and the Bradley Observatory, which is open to the public the second Friday of each month.
Columbia Theological Seminary, an educational institution of the Presbyterian Church (USA), prepares women and men for leadership in ordained and lay ministries through degree programs and lifelong learning opportunities. Its beautiful 52-acre campus anchors the southeastern quadrant of the City.
Beach party: Decatur brings in 40 tons of sand and turns the square into a beach for this annual event. Live band performs from the stage that stretches across Ponce de Leon Avenue.

Sept. 12 is Holy Cross Day at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Cross in Decatur and church members will be celebrating with a reception following their 9:30 a.m. service.
Accreditors eye DeKalb schools
Over the next critical 30 days, accreditors will determine if DeKalb County schools require drastic improvements and a thorough investigation.
Kid Rock faces trial over Waffle House brawl
Star hick-hopper Kid Rock is returning here next week, though not for a gig. Instead, he will be sitting in a DeKalb County courtroom on Tuesday, a defendant in a lawsuit over a pre-dawn brawl at a Waffle House three years ago.
